The 7 Stages Of Staying At Home

27th March 2020

I’ve reached two weeks in the house. Hi. How are we all?

In between watching my kid do yoga (I’m jealous of her calm) and washing my hands, I’ve been writing down my thoughts.

And if you read me for the life updates, I’ve been um, upgraded since this interesting mishap.

Honestly, when we moved back to Edinburgh, I imagined a little more social and less social distancing. But here we are.

For my part, here’s a little list I like to call The 7 Stages of Staying Home.

Not our home. But nice. Photo by Rob Wingate on Unsplash

Stage 1.

Let’s get all the snacks. This is the time I’ll write my book. And take vitamins. And sort out my desk.

Let’s line up what to watch. And read. Perhaps alphabetize our book shelves. (Not me, but you do you)

We can do this.

Stage 1b.

Yay, homeschooling!

Day 1: Morning yoga, Isla’s idea. Then some drawing.

Me: What’s that?

Isla: You, with fat calves.

Because I have skinny ones in real life.

Whatever. We can do this. This is fun. When’s lunch?

Stage 2.

Let’s open Facebook. Because we need a break from doing nothing. And eating. Scroll Facebook, get depressed. SOCIAL MEDIA BREAK.

Look at me, not on Facebook. Let’s do laps around the house. Yes, really.

It’s been ages. Check Facebook again, feeling refreshed.

Eight minutes have passed.

Stage 3.

Bored now. Let’s tour a museum online. Use this time to learn something. Revisit some writing goals.

The kid reads to me, not so bored now.

Did I mention my husband shaved his beard off? That’s new.

For more things to do in self-isolation, read this post from SimplyEmma.

Stage 4.

We need other humans. Contemplate video calls. Not there yet. Call parents. Check in with an online support group.

Like these:

Blogging & Beverage and Gin & Lemonade’s FB page – these go with this blog, but they are really for you. At the moment, BAB has check-in and chat threads for everyone, no matter what you’re feeling.

Bad Women – Run by a blogger friend who traveled to Skye for pizza on my daughter’s fourth birthday.

Stage 5.

Speaking of travel, how bored are we all now? So let’s daydream about travel. All those times we could leave the house Even if we chose not to, we could.

Isla: Can I use your purple hair wax?

Me: Go for it. It’ll be something different.

Read a book. Consider bookish armchair travel.

Stage 6.

Freak out a little. Or a lot. That’s OK, too. Screw it, let’s do a video chat. So we can be bored and alone together. Holy facing camera, Batman! Close video chat.

Read this post for better ways to cope with anxiety during lockdown.

Stage 7.

It’s OK. Staying home saves lives. And there’s still snacks left.

Maybe after all this time, I WILL try yoga.

Me: Aw, dude. Are you drawing our house?

Isla: No, it’s Daddy and his big feet.

Well. Some things don’t change.

What stage are you at? How are you doing?

Stay home and stay well.

I’m coming to the end of my maternity leave and since last Friday I’ve been helping my work team remotely by working from home. Of course I’m juggling work with looking after Elsie and housework so it’s been really challenging. I am beyond drained. I’m going to do some more work on Monday and then say I will only help with video editing as I am shattered and want to enjoy my annual leave that I’ve bolted onto the end of my maternity with Elsie. These are such challenging times for us all!

I have been officially isolating for about a week or so. But I don’t know for sure because in my normal life I tend to fill a bit isolated and stay at home most of the time anyway. So I’m kind of used to it and the self-isolation isn’t really bothering me that much at the moment. But in a month or two that may be different, but we will see.

Hi Alex, my regular routine hasn’t changed much, either. It’s all the added extra. One day at a time, though. Stay well and safe. Thanks for reading me, too. Lorna

I’m at the stage of the end of my first week of working at home and is it time to open a beer yet? Going one day at a time and being thankful for the ability to work at home and trying to keep positive. We will get through this.

So I was late to this, and just dashed off a post on my blog on grief. Ack–seems we’re all working through the stages. Yesterday was my first time out in 14 days for only necessary stuff and no close distances. We had a successful delivery of $350 worth of groceries (but very few actual snacks, which sucks!) earlier in the week, so we’re good for a while. And my boys’ remote learning is manageable at the moment, so that’s something. And we have plans to take our little dinghy out on the river for some social distancing over the water, if it ever stops raining. And I’d be so happy if I won that writing contest, cuz I could really use the money, since much of my freelance is on hold–hopefully not forever! In the meantime, I’m writing (not everything I should but something). Thank you, as always, for all you do to connect us blogo-types.

So true and funny! I’m trying to video teach from home with 3 cats wandering through instead of a bunch of 2nd graders! Teaching to them is NOTHING like my kiddos!

hehehe! This did make me chuckle. After a week and a day of home schooling I am so sick of it. lol The kids are less keen this week and they’re getting argumentative. I think we need to do some yoga. lol x

I’m still on the snacking stage, feel I should have moved on by now. Also, is getting irritated at people a stage?

    • Reply Lorna 10th June 2020 at 4:09 pm

I can hadle like, one socially distanced visit every two weeks, ha.

Brilliant post Lorna. I am in a new stage. The I am not ready to go back to normal but it is being forced upon us stage, it kinda crosses the why are people such idiots, have we forgotten that we are in the middle of a global epidemic stage.

Such a changeable time for us all isn’t it x x
