I Am Not a Cook

8th September 2010

I just finished a rather lovely dinner that Sarge made.  I eat, but I don’t cook.  Last night, while watching Life Is Beautiful for the first time (what took me so long?), I ate another meal Sarge made.  And I cried.  Twice.  But that was the film, and had nothing to do with his cooking.  When it’s my turn to cook, we get take-out, which is probably safer for all involved. I have tried to cook.  I have the burn…

Life Imitates Art

7th September 2010

Stieg Larsson’s Millennium Trilogy has made me change the habit of a lifetime.  I love the books and the films (so far).  I love them equally.  This has never happened before.  Ever.  I am always disappointed with film versions.  Or I think that the films are better than the books they started from.  (Frida, for example.  Moving on.) Frida Kahlo was not a tattoo artist…

6th September 2010

It would have been cool if she had been, though. Anyway, I’m still reading Frida: A Biography of Frida Kahlo, and I’ll probably give it 3 stars on Goodreads.  That means I like it.  I’d like it more if the author got out of the way of the story.  I know there is such a thing as putting things in context.  I appreciate context.  I’ve just now read that Hayden Herrera is an art historian.  This puts her over-long explanations…

Which way did they go, George?

4th September 2010

I met Sarge on his lunch break yesterday.  For lunch.  It felt quite decadent, eating at a restaurant in the middle of the afternoon, while not being on holiday. I might not be on holiday, but I still don’t know where the hell I am half the time.  Geographically/directionally speaking, of course.  This isn’t because I’m new to the city.  I lived in Glasgow for more than four years, in the same neighbourhood for nearly three of those, and I…

The 29 List

2nd September 2010

This is the actual list that this blog isn’t actually about.  I posted it on Facebook, and said this: I plan to use the last year of my twenties doing this stuff. Like me, this is in no particlar order: Eat more sushi (and as it happens, dumplings.) Stop writing on envelopes and phone bills which people end up throwing out, because they don’t know I write on envelopes and phone bills. (Really good stuff, at 2 am.) Renew the…
