I’ve lost count of the days I’ve been without my laptop. These days, when the kid leaves for school (because that happens here), she sets a stuffed animal on my notebook (an actual notebook, my faves are marble composition books and I talked them about here.)
The stuffed animal is a scruffy looking cat with big eyes which Isla has named after me, and insists is my writing mascot. (Still not as scruffy as this one.)
Anyway, the thing is I’m supposed to write until she gets home and somehow have the cat on my person when Isla walks through the door. Which she does after pushing the buzzer on the main door, and ringing the doorbell. Setting off my fright reflex.
She discovered this quirk of my Cerebral Palsy one day, after a weekend walk with her Dad. I had the house to myself, and I was watching Dateline, as you do.
And then the kid knocked on the window.
‘You jumped!’
‘Yes, dear.’
‘Really high!’
‘OK.’
So, that’s something. She can do it, but warns me of other things that set me off.
‘They’re gonna pop ballons, Mumma.’
‘Cats hissing, not good, maybe do something else. I’ll turn the TV down.’
I find fireworks nostalgic, and they don’t really bother me.
In somewhat related news, coasters are dangerous. Stick with me.
Isla sets Lorna the cat near the coffee cup for Lorna the me to start the morning’s typing. I crank up the coffee shop sounds and go. Take a coffee break and lift my Edinburgh mug to my mouth. It moonlights as a soup bowl, but never mind. And because the table in this rented place is not ours to brand with coffee rings, and my husband is practical, there’s a coaster there, too.
Now. I think coffee rings add character to tables. I think coasters are a little over-zealous. Too neat. And I don’t expect them. Like, go away.
About that.
There I was, not expecting a coaster, because character. But the square piece of shit is stuck to the mug until it clatters on to the keyboard, and I jump. Because why not? Because I didn’t ask for a coaster. And anyway, stay on the table. You had one job.
I jump and dump the coffee on the keyboard.
Because Isla wasn’t home to warn me about loud noises. Or something.
And so, I go back to analog writing. Notebook writing. With different pens. Mostly teal pens. Because teal is my happy place.
At some point, I (OK, Neil the techie, computer-hoarder husband) sets up my old, slow, and lumbering desktop (called Truman) which we for some reason didn’t put into storage when we um, down-sized.
I reset all my passwords everywhere, and talk to Truman nicely because he works at all. I chase up all the files I’ve ever emailed myself because I’m lonely, I do that.
All of my bookmarks on Truman are wedding related, because it’s been that long. So that’s nice.
And I’ve kind of been channeling the writer I was 7 years ago, or even longer ago, the one who isn’t so anxiety-ridden.
She’s still there. Hi.
And she (OK, me, ok I) sent so many pages to her husband’s printer (in his office in the hallway) that the printer ran out of ink.
My most recent pages start in my notebook again and I type when I can.
I no longer take breaks by watching entire seasons of old shows, or hour-long blooper reels. I look up home office ideas on Dwell. Those are shorter breaks. Because, y’know, we’re renting again.
And so, I really miss Frank the Laptop, and I still think coasters are dumb. But I’m still writing. Even running out of ink.
Also, I recently read this post on whether an iPad Pro can replace a laptop. It’s kind of controversial, and I don’t have an iPad, either.
And I’m not suggesting that you dump coffee on your laptop if you’re stuck, but find something that makes you run out of ink again. Maybe this.
I have a writing mascot and kid who presses pens at me and checks in when she gets home from school.
‘Did you jump today?’
‘Yes, my dear.’
‘Cool!’

I have a two-foot high stack of those marble composition books that were my husband’s journals and a few of my own as well. They are the best. I also know your pain in spilling your coffee as I did the same with a glass of Coke on my nearly new Macbook Air three years ago. A painful experience as much was not backed up. We live and learn. Enjoyed your tale and good for you for not giving up.
Mine is a MacBook Pro, apparently the keyboard is holding up the repairs.
Mine was shot. Had to buy a new one.
Yes! How is it we humans haven’t perfected coasters yet? We’ve got marble ones (my husband, the neat freak, got them somewhere before me) and wow, do those make a bang! I’m still on my dying MacBook, since we got a bathroom remodel this summer (and a new tiled kitchen backsplash in an aquamarine (close to teal) I think you’d appreciate), so I’m not in a hurry to plunk down $2K, but I’m writing, some-ish. Never enough but then it is my busiest work season. Also contemplating a blog refresh, so that’s kinda exciting!
Since I started the Morning Pages thing and the guided journal thing, I’ve written through 3 pens from my stash. It’s so satisfying!
My friend Julie from the Bridge to The New Year group does interesting things with morning pages and brain dumps.
I’ve been diligent til this week. Then shit happened. Hoping to reset & resume this weekend.
Teal is Anya’s happy place, too. She writes with a teal pen every chance she gets.
Teal makes the best words. Honest.
Ugh, that sounds so frustrating! I’m glad you have a new laptop now, but I know that feeling – as a writer. Even one day without it and you’re like, “What do I do with myself?”
Thought you might. 💚 The laptop hasn’t returned from repairs. This machine’s a relic.
I truly believe we think and write differently when we do it by hand. That somehow it triggers a different part of our brain or something. I try to split a lot of my writing between computer and handwriting to try to tap into different pieces of myself. It might not have been what you wanted — and I’m sure you’ll be thrilled to get the laptop back — but sometimes it is a really good thing to have shit shook up.
I’m either notebook first for a few lines or straight unto the screen, depending on how my brain is working. I think you may be a kindred spirit, Dori. Nice to meet you!
I am so sorry about your laptop, but this was a very enjoyable read!!
Ha! I feel terrible about your laptop but I’m glad you got your groove back. I just cannot write in a notebook. I can’t write nearly as fast as I can think so it drives me crazy to slow everything down, even if it it would be good for me.
I can’t exist if I don’t have my laptop. Years ago I used to love getting a new beautiful tablet with clean plages waiting for me to fill it. Now I don’t even own one. #MMBC
I still have beautiful notebooks. Fewer now since I’ve actually had to use them again, though.
There is something to be said for old fashioned writing… however, I have found that I feel rather lost without my laptop!
I’m not going to lie, I had a good chuckle reading this. The reason why? I wasn’t laughing at you… I was laughing at the fact that I’ve done EXACTLY this. My only saving grace was that I keep a silicone keyboard cover on my laptop (for situations exactly like this). I would have killed this poor computer a few times over if it wasn’t for that cover…
I need one of those covers! Honestly, I put it in the budget plan for repairs.
This made me want to write! (Which isn’t a feeling I can always count on. So thanks!)
Hi, Julie. That means a lot, considering you make me want to write. So, no, thank you! Seriously, fangirl moment.
I love putting pen to paper! And I have a notebook for everything (all needed of course!). Even hubby rushes me past the stationery section in shops! Haha.
I hope your MacBook Pro survives. x #MMBC
Have you heard of Under The Rowan Trees? Stationery by post, ha! I haven’t ordered a box yet, but I want to. And you can hide it. https://www.facebook.com/undertherowantrees
I love my multi-color gel pens to write in my notebook (Moleskine for me.) I prefer to start writing anything by hand and usually finish on the laptop. Luckily, I haven’t dumped any liquid on my keyboard yet but it is my greatest fear when handling liquids near it (which means all the time.)
I’m going to check out “teal pens” – I bought a box of purple pens mainly because my sons had black and purple pens on their “must have” school pencil case list. 😊
Hi Linda, there should be some in here: https://ginlemonade.com/2019/05/02/12-awesome-gifts-for-writers/
Good luck with back-to-school!
First time here, Lorna and enjoyed this. Nothing compares to good old fashioned writing. I’ve got my composition note-book out and my fountain pen fired up – now to find a coaster!
Sorry about your laptop. I don’t know how I would get along without mine! Yes, I hate to admit it, but it’s true. I have been handwriting postcards ahead of our November election here in the US and already my hand hurts. I don’t think I could go back to analog writing! 🙂
