12 Awesome Gifts For Writers

I should be writing. And probably you should be writing.

But real talk, I’ve been working on this post since my birthday and wanted to get it out.

And so, I’m sharing a list of awesome gifts for writers. In case you are a writer, and your birthday’s coming up.

That’s how it worked for me.

For instance, my new favourite pen is the green one in this pack of Ink Joy pens.

Which I’m using with my monarch migration decomposition book. I honestly have about six notebooks going at once, but this one is my go-to, when I can find it.

When I can’t find my notebook, any notebook, there’s large sticky notes. This is an awesome idea if you’re too wordy for the smaller ones. And if, also like me you like lines on ALL THE PAPER, then this is my kind of motivation.

And speaking of motivation, who uses coffee as motivation?

Every word count goal hit, or even blog post posted gets a fresh cup of coffee.

I recently received a coffee subscription box from Dog & Hat.

I enjoyed my first box of coffee (two different and delicious bags) for free, but I’m going to subscribe because who doesn’t love coffee by mail? They support independent coffee roasters, you can choose a two, three or four 250gs of espresso or filter coffee (or a mix) and if you quote GIN in the order section, you get a 100g bag for free with any order. This is really a fun way to discover new coffee you might not otherwise find. It’s fuelled my words for a few weeks now.

And if you like your writing sessions a little stronger, I actually got this gin o’clock gin glass for my birthday. From my Dad. He’s a good Dad.

I use the glass for beer. I’m a rebel.

So if we were having coffee or gin and a writing session, I might also suggest the Writers & Artists Yearbook, for ways to y’know, actually get our writing out there.

And did I mention I really want these noise-cancelling headphones to go with my Go Away, I’m Writing mug, and this non-spill travel mug? Traveling not necessary, but it’s useful to not spill coffee on your laptop.

Speaking of laptops, I’ve named mine Frank, and he is a MacBook Pro. People have asked what I use, and Frank has been with me for years, still working after those aforementioned coffee spills.

Writing classes also make useful gifts for writers. Online ones work for those of us who are geographically challenged. Y’know, that feeling that all the cool stuff happens not where you are?

Well, I got a MasterClass all access pass for my birthday. From Neil.

He’s a mostly supportive non-writer husband of his writer wife.

But we have a deal. I have to y’know, go through the classes. Currently working through Neil Gaiman teaches storytelling, together with my writing buddy over here.

OK, so I’ve listed some pretty cool writer stuff, but the best gift you can give a writer is writing time and headspace.

If you know a writer, don’t bother them during scheduled writing time. Unless something is falling off.

If you are a writer, honor your writing time.

Believe in yourself and in that what you’re writing needs to be out there.

Write your words, and then reward yourself.
