NaNoWriMo really is my favorite time of year.
I woke up and declared my writing project.
My idea to write 50,000 words in the month of November. National Novel Writing Month. And this year, I have a PLAN.
How about you?
Let’s be NaNoWriMo writing buddies.
In order to get in the writing zone, I wanted to share this survey as a way to focus.
NaNoWriMo tag questions from Natalia Leigh.
1. How many times have you participated in NaNoWriMo? How many times have you won?
We have a long, complicated relationship.
I found it when I ran a group for young writers (that I’m too old for now. Hi.)
First year, I got to 35K, with subsequent tries anywhere from 10,050 to 256 words.
2. Are you a pantser or a plotter?
Pantser. See above answer.
3. What are the titles of the projects that you have attempted/completed for past NaNos?
Changed titles and projects many times, except for the ones with decent word counts.
First one was a realistic romance/family saga thing, because I was young and into those books. Yes, really.
Also attempted an epistolary novel, but I got sick of writing letters to myself. There’s also been a book of poetry that I journaled, typed and printed, and then pasted, with actual glue, back into a journal. That was an interesting year.
Then there was a nostalgic time-travel piece, and last year was something on divorced parents spending Christmas together, which I took from life, and a Christmas road trip.
4. What are you working on for NaNo this year?
Actually, actually? A book of essays. Memoir, I suppose.
And this year’s participation badge is so sparkly, I don’t want to disappoint it.

5. What is one tip that you’d give to someone else that is participating in NaNo?
Do it.
Every day is new. It’s about honoring your writing time. It’s about slinging words, any words. It’s a giant global write-in. It’s not a test.

6. What was the inspiration for this novel? Do you remember when the inspiration hit you?
Inspiration hit me about 38 years ago.
But seriously.
My fiction brain is fried. So I’m finally going to write the nonfiction essays that have been rattling around for years. Expanding on blog posts I’ve written on life with a disability, and being a third-culture kid who grew up.
And not a novel, but that’s the current writing project.
7. Read us the first sentence from your NaNo novel last year?
‘Whose idea was this?’
About a dinner party. And possibly a general question.
8. What do you plan to do with your manuscript after NaNo?
Pitch it.
9. Are you prepared for NaNo? Are you nervous?
I love the buzz of NaNo, the connectedness, and the excuse to put one word after the other.
This year I’m looking forward to cutting the bullshit and getting back to why I started writing, and what I’m trying to say.
Recently, I’ve been dealing with stuff where I am just a number, even though I know I’m not.
Looking forward to getting back to my travel stories, and my human stories, and my sarcastic stories.
I promise they won’t be boring, and I have snacks.
Are you participating in NaNoWriMo?
What’s your project and goals for the month?
May the words and coffee be with us all.

I signed up…. not sure if I will even get off the mark though, with this silliness with my health.
Good luck to you though!
may this be the year you win!
You can do NaNoEdMo. You’re ahead of me, anyway. How did today go? Thinking of you. <3
More blood tests needed to rule our rheumatoid arthritis then will look at auto immune issues… 😥
Drink lots of juice, watch lots of brain candy TV.
Sounds like a plan!
LOL! I love your answers. I’ve never done this challenge. I do LOVE the badge! Picture books…that’s way too many words. Poor kids. Best wishes!
Thanks for sharing my Story Empire post on NaNo. Here’s hoping you “crush” the challenge!
Thank you for writing your post, Mae!
I’m doing NaNo, despite being creatively and physically exhausted, because I’ve got ten years under my belt now and I couldn’t break that streak. This year I’m writing a retelling of a medieval French story (‘Bisclavret’) — werewolves, gay yearning, it’s gonna be a hoot. And by a hoot, I mean it’s going to be full of angst, though it should at least have a happy ending.
Just added you as a buddy! (I’m ‘delorfinde’ on the site, as I have been since I was… thirteen…)
I have chosen not to participate in NaNoWriMo but I very interested to hear about it from fellow writers. Love the badge!
Great Answers! I’m writing the first draft of a story I wrote a plan for during the ‘Story A Day’ Challenge in September. I’m already behind on words!
There’s no behind, just more new words every day!
I’m doing it, though I don’t expect to win. But I might, because I’ve started dictating it into “Notes on my phone, which transcribes it right away, even bits like “oh bugger I mean…” it’s all words, right? And I don’t have time to revise, so the inner critic had to quit. PS you can copy from notes into any writing software… and use it on iPhone as well as iPad.
Yep, I’m a fan of notes everywhere, too. I’m glad you checked in on this post, Gabi!
Can’t wait to hear about all your NaNo success–a perfect time to write your essays/memoir. And I think it makes so much sense to start with what you already have, on your blog and in your brain. I’m DYING to get back to my WIP, but if I do I won’t be querying the finished thing. Ugh. I’ve had no fewer than three published authors look at, critique, and re-do my query letter. It seems there are so many ways a query can suck! So…write, write, write. I’ll be looking on from the sidelines, cheering you on!
Once I did, when time was there, and house was empty. I did it, and gave myself a good first draft. For me once was a luxury and I pantzed my way through and got courage from doing it; without any pre planning, which I was unaware I could do. In my menu there is a page called writing where I still display my certificate/badge 2014 was a good year. Good luck with yours.
I’m typically not reward-motivated but I want to do nanowrimo just for that sparkly badge! I am doing Nano Poblano this month and hoping to pump out some creative non-fiction essays that will be the start of my book project, but I just can’t put the pressure on myself to do it all in one month! It is a good motivation to get started on lots of things I’ve been wanting to start though. Best of luck to you!
Ahhh! I’m so glad to know you’re into National Novel Writing Month! (I’ve done / won every year since 2004!) Still writing my Camp NaNo novel from April, 2020. 118K words and counting!
I want to declare THE THING for Camp NaNo in July. 118K is beautiful work!
You SHOULD declare The Thing for July Camp NaNo! I’ll prob redeclare my current project again, LOL, because it will likely be still going!
