Coffee Talk Life

If We Were Having Coffee And A Timeout

20th April 2020

If we were having coffee these days, it would probably be whipped coffee on a zoom meeting.

I’ve tried two of those, zoom meetings. With the camera off. That might defeat the purpose or whatever. But I don’t need to see the size of my pores or feel bad about my chins.

A few weeks ago, I might have mentioned that my kid cut my husband’s hair. I suggested that she go from the ends, but what do I know? She cut a sizeable chunk from the top, but it’s like who’s going to see you?

She was obsessed with making it even, which I suppose is a good quality to have. But she fell asleep before she could finish her masterpiece.

And last week she got a home haircut, too. Literally chopped off her pony tail. With her permission. And now things are bouncing, I guess.

No one has touched my head. Yet.

Actual nostalgic haircuts can be found here.

And I have tried whipped coffee, though. So that’s a band-wagon to jump on.

I liked it for five seconds until I stirred it. And then it was just iced coffee. Which is delicious. But not new.

Another thing that’s new and also not new is I’m working on a new writing project. I haven’t told many people, and I’m not sure what it is, but there’s words.

I need a project in times of crisis and weirdness, otherwise anxiety wins.

So, I’m working on something. I’m also trying to keep my kid happy, and home-schooled.

We’re also watching family movies, and Isla makes me drive over bubblewrap, because that’s fun for everyone.

And then we watch true crime stuff, not with the kid. But I use true crime to unwind. I legit spend my late nights shouting at my laptop (where I watch TV) ‘I should have been A LAWYER. Because (lack of) EVIDENCE, you asshole.’

And I’m stressing. Because after all the snacks, and the three pages a day, (that I’m writing, in different colors to keep me focused) and the wipeable maths book (the one Isla asked for and her eyes lit up when Neil brought it home. Who’s child is this? His, I s’pose.) and the dancing and the yelling, and the masking and the hand-washing, are we doing enough? Where is this going? And can everyone just stay home?

Like yesterday, Isla told me to go to my room. ‘You need a timeout’, she said. She’d taken all the cushions off the couch and was flipping. I let her, because obviously we haven’t found a gymnastics class and because well, she can.

‘Please don’t break yourself,’ I ask her. I also pray to the rental deposit gods that she doesn’t put her foot through the wall, because we don’t own this house. This is not our house.

So, my kid sent me to my room. Where I stayed. Read my book, drank my coffee. I hid. And I breathed. And I went out again. Into the living room.

My point is this, we are enough. And if you need a timeout, take one. In whatever room you can find, doing whatever you do, with whatever beverage you want.

And don’t forget to breathe.

The whole “UGH, look at my chins!” thing is a thing. For Zoom or Messenger calls or whatever. And mostly we spend time looking up each other’s nostrils because our hands get tired of holding the phone and we set it down. Or we get distracted and the camera shows an eyeball or chin hairs. Sigh. It’s something I guess. Stay sane and healthy! OH, I just remembered a time when we had a Skype visit (or some such thing) years ago. I refused to turn on the camera. And the man on the other side was quite offended…LOL. His problem.

I can relate on the Zoom thing. I spend a few minutes beforehand angling my phone to capture the fewest of my chins.

Wild laughter–my daughter bosses me around like that! I am not alone–woohoo!

Hi Lisa, glad to know I’m not alone, either, ha. She’s definitely bravesmartbold. (Too much? True, though.)

It’s tough, but it sounds as though the writing will save you. If not, take a trip to Egypt, or the Louvre or the Northern Lights. They’re all available. As is the “Make me look better’ button on Zoom. Not kidding.

The Louvre is over-rated, as is the Mona Lisa. But the d’Orsay is wonderful. And I’ve been following Wellington the penguin, too. Hope you’re well, Gabi. <3

I prefer the D’Orsay too. I expect it’s got virtual visits too. But Wellington sound (ahem) good too. I’m doing fine. Used to living on my own, and enjoying having extra time to read. And I’m managing to write. (I text my word count to a non-writing friend every day, and sometimes it’s 0 but mostly it’s somewhere between 300 and 1300. Also, mostly rubbish but one has to start somewhere… 🙂

    I too haven’t used Zoom… I feel well old.
I cut hubby’s hair yesterday. I thought I would mess it up but it actually wasn’t too bad. #MMBC

My teen loves those Zoom meetings. Her and her college friends have a daily get together.
Home hair cuts are fun. I chopped mine too. It was past my shoulders and now it’s chin length. lol
We have been watched so many movies. I have introduced the kids to many that I loved as a child.
hahaha! It sounds lovely being sent to your room. x

I think we are into what our fourth week of self isolation. I’m still going to work each day so that part if normal. I agree take a time out, be gentle with yourself (and others). Currently I’m going an adult paint-by-numbers and have to say it is calming as I fill in the spaces. Just what I need this week. Seeing results which helps. Take care

Keep writing and running over bubble wrap – that made me laugh! I agree if we need a timeout then we need to take it. I’m officially growing my hair at the moment. Have shared.

I have tried the whipped coffee thing, and it’s just a Greek coffee, which is yummy. I did switch it up a bit and added the whipped part to normal, hot brewed coffee and that was yummy too.

Yep, whole FB thread with my Greek friend. Also, the recipe I linked to under ‘whipped coffee’ goes into Greek origins.

Whipped coffee? I think I’ve missed this one. What I really want is a proper coffee, in a café, maybe a baked goods too. And to watch people. I’m already bored of my garden.

I love Zoom, we use it a fair bit for work conferences (in the ‘normal’ world) and I was on a multi time zoned Zoom call earlier in the week for my best friends 60th birthday – it was fantastic. Stay safe and well and enjoy your beverage.

I love hearing your voice and perspective. It definitely sounds like it is staying interesting at your house. And for the record I avoid Zoom like the plague. I just can’t bring myself to do it, and luckily none of that is mandatory for my life.

I often sneak off for a bit of timeout! Hehe.
Hope you and yours are all keeping safe and well. x #MMBC
