My Dad and stepmother (not officially or of the evil variety) have moved in while they are um, between houses.
I originally planned to write a blog series, a post a day about their stay. That hasn’t worked because I’ve only recently found my way back to the laptop.
Isla is back at school today after a long weekend, and when she’s home she still asks me to hang out with her, SO THAT’S WHAT WE DO.
And so, today.
You know when you sit down to write, and there’s this blank screen? And the house is too quiet?
And you don’t know whether to turn on music, or listen to a podcast, or pretend you’re in a coffee shop, or be OK with the silence?
Yeah.
Also.
You don’t know how small your medium-sized house is until your family comes to stay, and they bring some cats. Their cats, not random cats. But still.
You guys know how much I love my Dad.
And the house was getting kind of quiet with the kid starting full days at school. Except for the two days she was home last week.
So here we are.
You might also know how I use writing prompts when faced with a blank screen.
Well, a recent prompt over at Story A Day was The List.
And that got me thinking.
I love it when my you guys ask me questions. And a recentish question from Christine at I’m Sick And So Are You went like this:
So, why isn’t your life a sitcom already?

Well.
I don’t know.
I write funny stuff, but it’s actually more funny in real life?
We don’t have an annoying but loveable neighbor that comes over all the time?
There’s not enough cheesecake?
It’s another show about nothing?
One of the ways I’ve been de-stressing recently is by watching old shows. Friends with Neil, Golden Girls by myself, whenever I am by myself.
A few laughs, and it all works out in the end.
And I thought I’d take our current living with parents and cats situation, the reader question, and the list writing prompt, and share with you:
10 Possible Episode Titles If My Life Were A Sitcom:
1. Overcrowded House. Lorna’s Dad and Anne move in with two cats. Neil is highly allergic to cats and inlaws and everything. Neil decides to DO ALL THE HOUSE THINGS. Cleans out fish tank, defrosts freezer. All while wearing a mask. Isla follows her Dad around, narrating.
2. Who Brought All The Shoes? Isla goes into the living room to explore the boxes. She reports back that her Campah owns more shoes than her mother. Survey says: that’s true.
3. Who Let The Cat Out? One night after dinner, a cat escapes to the neighbouring field. Yes, field. Everyone is out with flashlights. An annoying but loveable neighbor would be useful.
4. No, You Pick It Up. Dad and Anne go away for the weekend leaving one cat in everyone else’s not so capable hands. Neil and Isla argue about who has to pick up the cat, and point her towards her food. Lorna should have videoed the whole thing.
5. The Flashback Episode. Isla wakes up and decides that if everyone flushed themselves down the toilet, the family would end up in New York on vacation.
6. Discourage Your Daughter. Hour long-episode where Isla and Lorna enjoy some quality time when everyone else is working. The two have these conversations:
Lorna: Isla, put the pen back together, please.
Isla: OK, if you wanna be a meany-pants and discourage your daughter, that’s fine.
Lorna: Here, have all the pens.
and
Isla: That’s it, we’re stuck together. You have to come to school with me every day.
Lorna: OK by me.
7. Too Much Information. Lorna’s Dad offers to make coffee in the mornings, after he learns to use the machine. He comments that the drip of the coffee machine ‘sounds like an old man peeing.’ Lorna politely declines coffee and Neil goes back to making it for her.
8. Can I Speak To A Real Person? Lorna’s Dad borrows her laptop to order something online. The screen is too small. He calls customer service. He cannot speak to a real person.
9. And the Cat Came Back: The missing cat returns with stories of the field.
10. What Year Is It? The family do a puzzle in the kitchen with the Mets game on in the living room. Lorna gets nostalgic, and everyone’s hearts are warmed.
Still looking for an annoying yet loveable neighbor. There will always be shenanigans and snacks.
What’s your favorite TV show? If you wrote one, what would it be like?

This was a fun read. And I think I want to try Isla’s idea and flush myself down the toilet and go on vacation.
You should totally write a sitcom!! You’ve got almost a season’s worth of episodes right there…
Too many episodes for Netflix, ha!
Love this as usual. My programme would be set in a Suffolk village, A victorian school house with a well, an adoring husband and a beautiful rescue dog. The main character is an Author who joins the Theatre group for fresh tales, new faces and to expand her skillset. Her work wear is pajamas and large India inspired scarves that double as tablecloths. Oh dear that is quite enough of myself. Memoir next on the list. 😇😃
A fabulous sit-com I’d love to watch!!
This week, thanks to the laxatives the doctor prescribed to clear Kai’s constipation, my life’s been like those sitcoms full of one-liners that sound raunchy but aren’t meant that way. Like “I got somethin’ in my pants for you. It’s hot!” and “My penis looks like it’s covered in melted chocolate!” Someone needs to help my writers out. Or come deodorize my trash can. I’m not picky.
Haha Lorna I would totally watch your sitcom. I love cop and detective dramas a lot
I think it would be a hit!
I think mine would be a family sitcom too,b ased on an Indian family with the kids born here and the parents from back home, and the dilemmas faced by both generations, in a comic way!
So funny. My husband is suddenly seized with a need to Do All The Things when his in-laws come to stay, too!
Thought of you and the Facebook Live from the beginning! Do you still have family visiting?
Oh, I so get it, I do!! ;-)))
I vote for “Can I Speak to A Real Person”! Your Dd sounds like a hoot!
Oh, Lorna, as always your razor-sharp, desert-dry humor makes me laugh and puts a smile on my face! My mama is about to move in with us for 2 months while she gets some major surgery she can’t get at home in the boonies, so some version of this will soon be our reality – thanks for giving me a new perspective on how to find the humor in the tense moments that I am sure are forthcoming!…
I can tell how much you like cats!
There were two cats on this planet who owned me, they were literally more like dogs. Had my heart. The rest, not so much.
The key – they were more like dogs. Because dogs are better than anything.
Oh my gosh, these titles are too great! I’d watch any of those shows! My favorite sitcom will always be Friends. I love me some Golden Girls too though. Parks and Recreation is also a favorite because I work for a City Government, so it’s relatable. I think my show would be called “That Hot Mess” LOL.
I happen to think Jane the Virgin is a tremendous show (Netflix). It’s about a young woman who wants to be a writer, and is basically an extremely insightful telenovela, with plenty of writerly inside jokes. In English except for the grandmother, (abuela) who only speaks Spanish. If you don’t have Netflix, you can probably find excerpts on YouTube. If you can’t be inspired by the characters, the soapy plot twists should do the trick…
I think your sitcoms would be a hit!
I also love re-watching Friends – years later I still have a laugh when I watch. I’ve been on a few holidays with family and in-laws – does that count towards a sitcom? Might be called “Against her better judgement” or “The vacation she agreed to after drinking too much wine” or “Never again”. “Absolutely not” might also be an idea?
I truly love all your ideas, and would totally watch your show.. And my next post includes some faves from Friends. I hope you’ll read it when it’s up, and thanks for reading this one!
I like it. I have never thought about this kind of writing prompt before, by the way. It’s a fun idea–and a fun way to get to know more about you…I’m sorry you’re dad had to share about old men peeing…that sounds vaguely familiar, as if I’ve lived that before. It’s the kind of think you cannot forget 🙂
I love this. Your show is my fave show. OK, well there’s always Luther, Vera, and Shetland, and all the brutal murders that go on over there in the UK. Think I’m in denial? Or, Mrs. Bucket–she always sorts everything out. What can I say, I have a BBC problem. Tho lately I’ve been too busy to watch much of anything–oh, Billions with my husband and Better Call Saul. I’d watch Bob Odenkirk watch grass grow. Guess I’m watching more TV than I thought!
