Blogging Goals To Get More Writing Done

7th January 2020

I’ve finished all the chocolate, so I guess I better get back to work. Hi. Happy New Year.

The kid went back to school yesterday, and I’m trudging through post-holiday blues. Which replaced during-holiday blues, and moonlighted for my generalized anxiety disorder. It’s not just for Christmas.

The Christmas road trip and other stories is still coming up, which includes how I met Orla at Fancy Paper.

But today, I’m jumping on the yearly goal declaring bandwagon.

For the past few years, my themes have been MOAR words, more connection, and new beginnings. And also shenanigans. All of that is still true.

And while I had a good year with less, but more focused writing, I’ve been thinking about how to use blogging to get more writing done.

Because that’s really what I do, and I need to do more of it. And I know I don’t take my own writing advice, but stick with me.

If we have books or projects we want to finish, we need to start them. If we have blogs we want to drive traffic to, we need to show up. If we want to get paid (more) for our writing we need to write more words. Hopefully good ones.

If we want to change the world, we need a bigger club of people who call us out on bullshit, tell us to use our voices and do our things.

I should probably join one of those clubs, or actually participate more in the accountability groups that I’m in.

Which brings me nicely to my goals for 2020.

This list contains a Blogging Breakthrough’s Mastermind affiliate link and I receive a commission if you visit the link and buy something on my recommendation. Purchasing via an affiliate link doesn’t cost you any extra, and I only recommend products and services I trust. All opinions are my own. Read more at my disclosure here.

Blog more consistently. Shooting for 3 posts a week. I have plans and pins for my next two posts, so.

Pitch 50 non-blog essays. Because writing off blog is fun and freeing.

Expand my blogging circle. I love my regular readers and want to reach more.

Get past the obvious. I want to go deeper than repeated reader comments such as Thanks for the reminder that disabled people are human beings. There’s more to say than that.

Develop an email opt-in that’s more than Blogging & A Beverage, my Facebook Group.

Work on perks for my Patreon.

Journal more.

Listen to or catch up on podcasts. For a while now, I’ve started my day by listening to podcasts.

The kid goes off to school and the silence is a little too much so I turn on podcasts for a pep talk, and to not feel so alone with my thoughts.

I know I have an issue with inspiration, but I do appreciate motivation.

To me, a great podcast is like coffee with that one friend who gives really good advice, and actually knows what they’re talking about. Or is trying to figure life out and taking us along for the ride.

These are my favorite podcasts to listen to for writing motivation and a blogging post.

Blogging Breakthroughs with Faith Mariah – Faith also has a Blogging Breakthroughs Mastermind group that I’m glad to be part of, and that helps me with the rest of these goals. For more info on the mastermind group, and to join The Mastermind for the next round, click here.

What podcasts do you listen to?

Something else I’d like to do this year is finish all the courses I’ve started. I’m a course hoarder and info junkie. But I’d like to take the time this year to implement more of what I’ve learned. As I finish each course, I’ll add the details to my blogging resources post.

All of these goals go toward the same thing: to add more value with my posts and offer more to my readers and community.

I also hope that this year’s goals will bring me closer to my 40 Before 40 goals.

Great goals, Lorna. I wish you all the best in 2020.

My hope was to make a dent on book two. But that is the last thing on my mind right now.
      I’ll still try though.
I’ll keep blogging, and get creative where I find the energy!

I need a project, or anxiety wins. Stay safe.

I’m working my way though my writing course, which has given me a little purpose!

The whole g-word makes me freeze, but I really need to get at it, because I’m just scattered and goal-less at the moment, and I would just like one thing to click into place. Get an agent? Land one stinking short story this year? Finish my WIP? Catch up with Goodreads? OK, I did one creative thing today I didn’t even know was a goal–wrote a very short CNF essay and send it off to Ruminate for their “Readers Ruminate” series. We’ll see. I’m all about the one-offs these, days, which doesn’t make for good goal-setting. To-do list coming tomorrow, for sure! Thanks for the kick in the pants, as always. You 2020 is going to be great–I know it!

I love CNF and Literary Mama. And seriously goal setting and organization are entire separate sections in the Productivity Bundle I linked to. It’s good for taming the squirrels!

Good goals. Keep up the effort and you’ll be rewarded.

I love a good podcast. I’ll have to try the ones you suggested!

Let me know which one you like! They’re all great. 💜

I love how you mapped this all out. I do not listen to podcasts. I am thinking of reviving mine which makes me think I ought to listen to others…. but then again I am a video maker who doesn’t watch videos, she listens. Weird. But then again, I am,… my own, eccentric self. I love the writing focus because as a writer I have been woefully underfocused on writing and my problem is finishing the damn editing which I have told myself i hate. I need to woo the editor in me. Or I would love to romance the editor in me. Or something like that! So great to connect on your blog again!

Good luck with your goals and if you enjoy writing, why not join in on my short story prompt party? The current one is ending tomorrow evening but the next one is open from February 2 – 9. The first sentence prompt for that one is: The sun was shining brightly but then..

    • Reply Lorna 9th January 2020 at 9:03 am

Possibly! I follow your blog and I’m on your email list, so it’s on my radar. All the best with the linkup this year.

Do you mind sharing where you plan to pitch?

    • Reply Lorna 9th January 2020 at 4:38 pm

Everywhere I haven’t, and where I’ve already been. Non-fiction for now. Can I send you a Twitter DM?

Such a wonderful idea to note down the goals you’d like to achieve this year in terms of blogging. I’d love to guest post more whether on other blog sites or maybe for a brand.

Lorna I love a plan and you seem like your have some great ones. 3 posts is awesome and also pinning is so good. I am trying to pin more and have noticed the difference. I wish I was a good writer. I need to read more to write better then I get so behind on Social Media

These are some truly great goals, 50 non-blog pieces sounds incredible.

    • Reply Lorna 14th January 2020 at 10:57 am

Fewer than one a week. Saying that, I haven’t started yet, ha!

  • Reply ChelseaMamma 15th January 2020 at 5:25 pm

Good luck with your goals, they sound achievable to me

Thank you for the podcast suggestions Lorna, I’ll definitely check them out. One of my goals for this year is also to listen to more podcasts, particularly when I am cooking or doing other household chores.

I’m going to keep trying to post twice a week but this might not be possible once I’m properly back to work. I’ll just do what I can.

Rough January & February. March I decided to go through files/stories and ideas and see what was worth finishing. So have been adding/editing one this month.

It’s certainly been a difficult start to the year hasn’t it? But your goals are there for you, despite having so much going on. Take care x

You guys too, shared these again so that others might get something out of them. If I do things just for me, I go a bit spare! x
